"My New Life in Sweden" is Stephanie’s story of living 3 years in northern Sweden. This story is an account of her excitement while she began living on her own far away from her hometown in Texas. After some time and lots of explaining, they helped me acquire a working mobile phone, curtains, cooking utensils, and everything else I needed to live as a normal university student. They taught me how to cook special Swedish treats or how to buy a bus ticket. I bought a membership at the local gym and we’d meet for yoga or volleyball. Sometimes we would all make dinner together and eat while sprawled over the couch. I even started dating. Life seemed to be coming together. I could feel the season change from a cold autumn to an even colder winter and I was excited. I love the feeling of change; it keeps me from feeling too restless.""I stood to face a boy; I had never seen him before. I’m quite tall, but he was much taller. His arms were big and muscular and his hair was dark and curly. He stood there staring at me with a beaming smile. What was he so happy about? I couldn’t help but smile back; his excitement was contagious.“Are you the American girl?” he blurts. He smiles grows bigger, and I laugh.“Yes, I’m from...” I try to tell him that I’m from Texas, but I don’t get to finish. As soon as I say “yes,” he immediately wraps me in his arms, picks me up, and spins me around.“THIS IS GREAT!” he yells mid spin. I have no idea what’s going on. Who is this guy and why is he spinning me? He sets me safely back on the ground and introduces himself as Simon.“Nice to meet you,” I say, and introduce myself. “Are you also from the United States?”I’m surprised to learn he’s from Sweden, because he doesn’t look or act like the Swedes I’ve met so far; he is far less shy and much more muscular.“I love America, I’m a big fan,” he explains, and then bounces off into the crowd.“Oh no,” I thought to myself.
